Hey runners, in today’s newsletter, New York just made marathon history.
Sunday’s race got over 60,000 runners across the line in Central Park, making it the first marathon ever with more than 60,000 finishers. We’ve also dug into the data behind Andreas Almgren’s debut win, including the fastest second half by a New York winner since at least 2014.
The weekend had its tragedies too. Rachel Apa, 24, died after collapsing near Mile 24 in her first New York City Marathon. And Katie Suarez remains on life support after being stabbed on a Brooklyn waterfront path two days before the race.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: the benefits of sprinting, whether strength training actually prevents injuries, and how accurate your wrist heart rate monitor really is.

Sunday's race got 61,146 runners to the finish in Central Park, taking the title of the world's largest marathon back from London, and almost all of the year-on-year growth came from women.
The Swede ran the fastest second half by a New York winner since at least 2014, and his watch shows his heart rate rose by only seven beats a minute as he sped up.
Katie Suarez, 28, is on life support after she was stabbed in the neck on the Shore Parkway Greenway on Friday night. Police have released her photo and want to hear from anyone who saw her on the path.
Discover how sprinting boosts strength, speed, endurance, and overall fitness—plus why short bursts of fast running can deliver big results for runners of all levels.
Mentalist Oz Pearlman ran 2:37:43 to top New York Road Runners' list of 59 notable finishers, and William Goodge used the race to complete 50 marathons in 23 days.
Rachel Apa, a former Bucknell field hockey player, went down in Central Park near Mile 24 on Sunday. Her father says the cause was rhabdomyolysis, a rare breakdown of muscle tissue.
Almgren, a former 800m runner from Sweden, finished in 2:06:01 and covered the second half of the race faster than the first. His training log, lactate readings, watch data and official splits show how he prepared and how the race unfolded.
The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon is in the books, and Michael Doyle and Jessy Carveth break it all down after a huge race week in NYC. Andreas Almgren pulled off one of the most hyped marathon debuts ever and won with a big negative split. Sheila Chepkirui held off Hellen Obiri for the women’s title, and Jess McClain came back late to take second, the first American woman on the NYC podium since 2018. Michael and Jessy also cover Zouhair Talbi just missing a US Olympic quota spot, Conner Mantz’s tough day, and what the media room was like after the finish.
