Collection Highlights Magnolia Seed Co., Dallas, Texas, 1943 In the United States during World War II, people were urged to grow home gardens, called Victory Gardens, to help make up for critical shortages of food. The Victory Garden campaign was so successful that--in 1943 alone--home growers produced more than 8 million tons of food (compared to 11 million tons produced on farms during the same period). During the 1940s, there were an estimated 20 million Victory Gardens on the U.S. home front—most of which were tended by women. The Magnolia Seed Company was one of many sources for purchasing vegetable seeds and products needed for a Victory Garden.
