The world's fastest animal is losing the race for survival

In the wild, the cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world, reaching speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Online, they've become status symbols for the rich, who flaunt them on social media after purchasing the animals from an international open market.

Most of the big cats are being shipped from the self-declared East African state of Somaliland, where local government describes the animals as part of "our heritage." But rescuing cheetahs from traders is an arduous task for conservationists in a region racked by instability.
