Aujourd'hui, la Société de financement du développement international des États-Unis (International Development Finance Corporation ou DFC) a annoncé un plan de financement conjoint de 600 millions d'euros pour Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd., dont le siège est en Afrique du Sud, qui vise à accroître la capacité de fabrication de vaccins au niveau local. La DFC travaille en collaboration avec la DEG (Allemagne), Proparco (France) et la Société financière internationale (SFI) pour mobiliser ce financement. Ce plan permettra de faciliter le renforcement des capacités d'Aspen à produire des vaccins contre la COVID-19, avec une autorisation réglementaire stricte (SRA) et/ou d'utilisation d'urgence de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), y compris le vaccin Johnson & Johnson contre la COVID-19.

Les vaccins seront principalement distribués à l'Union africaine, au gouvernement sud-africain et à COVAX.

Cette initiative s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'objectif de l'administration d'augmenter la production de vaccins, d'investir dans l'ingéniosité et la résilience africaines, et d'aider la communauté mondiale à vaincre cette pandémie de COVID-19.
