Billionaire developer Eli Broad, who helped put Los Angeles on the high-culture map, dies at 87

Billionaire developer and arts patron Eli Broad, who spent big to help reshape Los Angeles, died Friday at 87, a spokeswoman said. Broad founded two Fortune 500 companies, and along with his wife, Edythe, donated hundreds of millions of dollars to institutions, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. They also opened the Broad Museum featuring works of art from their $1.6 billion art collection.
