No Construction Allowed on Holidays

Construction is not permitted on federal and District Government holidays. In observance of New Year's Day, construction work, for which a permit is required, is illegal and could result in a Stop Work Order and may be subject to fines.

In Case of an Emergency

If a critical issue comes up during non-business hours, such as building issues posing a risk to the public, please contact Homeland Security at (202) 727-6161 to reach a DCRA Duty Officer. These building issues include: 

  • Fire-Structural or habitability assessment
  • Structural collapse risk to public/other structures (i.e. vehicles impacting buildings)
  • Weather damage
  • Building habitability
  • Inspection for reconnection of utilities

In observance of New Year's Day, today, January 1, 2020, the District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) will be closed. Construction is prohibited in the District on New Year's Day. 

DCRA is closed and construction is also prohibited on the following 2020 holidays:

  • Washington's Birthday - Monday, February 17, 2020 
  • DC Emancipation Day - Thursday, April 16, 2020 
  • Memorial Day - Monday, May 25, 2020

  • Labor Day - Monday, September 7, 2020
  • Indigenous Peoples' Day - Monday, October 12, 2020
  • Veterans Day - Wednesday, November 11, 2020
  • Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 26, 2020
  • Christmas Day - Friday, December 25, 2020
