SEC officials aren't backing down from a potential fight with LSU over its plans to add former NFL players to the roster, and the options on the table have escalated fast.
According to Ross Dellenger, SEC school executives are exploring "extreme measures" to address the situation, including boycotting competition, sanctioning LSU with probation, filing a federal legal challenge, and even expulsion. One school official described the internal conversations as "serious."
Notably, this pressure isn't coming from the conference office. It's coming from the other 15 member schools. "The conversations within the conference are considered 'not league driven, but membership led,'" Dellenger said. "The 15 SEC university leaders, excluding LSU, have gathered over potential options to address the situation."
The timing adds intrigue. LSU's Sept. 19 trip to Ole Miss, already circled for Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford, could carry even more weight depending on how the Tigers' roster shakes out. Kiffin has landed commitments from players who went through the NFL Draft process and practiced in offseason minicamps or training camps.
In the meantime, Kiffin says that LSU "absolutely" plans to follow the rules if the judge's order gets reversed.
