Hey runners, in today's newsletter, Berlin delivered a course record and a worrying finish.
Tigst Assefa was ahead of world record pace with 2K to go before her stride fell apart, still winning in a course record and inside her own best. She's since been flown to Munich, where specialists will check whether her right Achilles is partially torn. On the men's side, Guye Adola broke away after 25K to win Berlin for a second time in a personal best by nearly a minute.
Every one of the six podium finishers wore the Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3, Assefa in a development version, just five days after the brand put the cheaper Adios Pro 5 on sale.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: 11 causes of a high running heart rate, seven tips for moving from running to triathlon, and how to know when you're running too much.

The Wahoo KICKR RUN — built for serious runners
If you've ever resented your treadmill for feeling more like cardio equipment than a real training tool, the Wahoo KICKR RUN is the antidote.
The KICKR RUN pairs natively with COROS watches so your indoor miles carry the same weight as your outdoor ones, runs on a powered RunFree mode that adapts belt speed to your pace automatically, and is engineered around runner-specific geometry: long deck, soft landing, near-silent motor. The most thoughtfully-designed treadmill we've seen for serious runners.
Michael Doyle and Jessy Carveth, live from Berlin, react to a dramatic 2026 Berlin Marathon. Tigst Assefa was 10 seconds ahead of world record pace at 40K and on track to break Ruth Chepngetich's 2:09:56. Then an apparent right Achilles injury left her limping through the final 2K.
Assefa set a course record while chasing the world record, and Adola won Berlin for a second time in a personal best. Here are the top 15 finishers in both races.
The Berlin Marathon winner hurt her right Achilles tendon inside the final 2K on Sunday, and specialists in Munich will check whether it is partially torn.
Guye Adola and Tigst Assefa won Berlin in Adidas' $500 racing shoe, Assefa in a development version of it, five days after the brand put the cheaper Adios Pro 5 on sale.
For many runners, running is their “home,” so to speak, in the athletics world. They are more than happy with focusing solely on running and training for road or trail races.
But how do you transition from running to triathlons?

The pair who ran 1:59:30 and 1:59:41 in London left their footprints at Adidas headquarters on Thursday, three days before a Berlin Marathon that Sawe will miss through injury.
The Ethiopian was ahead of world record pace with 2K to go, but her stride changed badly over the closing stretch and she finished in 2:11:04, still 49 seconds under her own best.
