Morning! This is Kristen Wong from Sports Illustrated. Salt air and rust on my door means it’s almost August. We’re more than halfway through the year, people! Which also means we’re inching closer and closer to death. On a lighter note, I bought my 10-year-old dog a yellow stuffed duck that I’m certain she’ll turn into a soggy pile of feathers. Hug your loved ones extra tightly, always.
Forward this to a friend with whom you’re going to drunk karaoke. Happy birthday, Kenny! And happy Spider-Man release day to all those who celebrate.

ALRIGHT, BET: In the WNBA’s latest faux pas, the league’s social media account shared a video of Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese betting $400 on an upcoming Wings-Dream game. After realizing that betting of any kind was banned under the collective bargaining agreement, the social team quietly deleted the video. Neither Bueckers nor Reese were reportedly punished for their friendly wager, but it was most certainly a bad look for the W.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, LEBRON: Philly’s new hero LeBron James could soon close a deal with ESPN on a behind-the-scenes docuseries similar to Michael Jordan’s The Last Dance, per reports. Here’s what Bron should take away from Jordan’s legacy-defining project. … And here’s all the notable post-signing news we wrote this week. … The Celtics and another surpring team reportedly showed interest in LeBron before he joined the 76ers. … LeBron’s agent Rich Paul sent a four-word text to Philly to congratulate the franchise on winning the sweepstakes. … Paul also hinted that LeBron’s 76ers tenure could last longer than you might think. … As for the Lakers, Luka Dončić has wasted no time establishing himself as the new alpha dog in L.A. Woof, woof.
SI GRAB BAG: New Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham shared an emphatic statement on the school’s “intense” rivalry with Ohio State. … In recent MLB trade deadline rumors, the Reds are considering moving ace Hunter Greene. … Here’s where Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is wrong about college football getting “back to the 70s.” … And last but not least, catch up on everything that happened during NFL training camp in this updated tracker of the latest news, key injuries, top plays and more.

Let’s have a look at what you missed online …
KARL, IS THAT YOU?: No, your eyes are not deceiving you. MLB play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech, who was laid off by ESPN earlier this month, called Thursday night’s Braves-Nationals game for the network. Since it’s the middle of the season, Ravech took the option to work some more games and is also expected to work the Little League World Series, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand.
SHANNY, IS THAT YOU?: Fake news from a real news outlet? In today’s A.I. age? Nawww. A local Chicago news station aired a meme of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan posing as Mitch McConnell in bed. You know, the proof-of-life pic. Shanahan suffered serious injuries from a car accident but is very much alive and opened up about the accident to 49ers media. We can’t confirm the same for Kentucky’s senator.
I SPY A WEIRDO: Yankees analyst Joe Girardi really wasn’t down with how his boothmate Michael Kay prepared his tea while they were calling a game against the White Sox. Honestly, fair. We’d be offended too.
ONCE A SAINT: Sometimes a sinner (cough, Bountygate). But usually always a Saint. Who dat presenting Drew Brees at the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Sean Payton, of course. Brees, a first-ballot selection, will officially be enshrined in Canton on August 8. This video of Brees calling his old coach to ask him to do the honors is what it’s all about.
KYLIE FOR PRESIDENT: Our favorite Kelce is back and delivering POTUS-worthy takes on her podcast. Say it louder for the men in the back: STOP COMMENTING ON WOMEN’S BODIES.
MOP MAN: We’re a bit late to the party, but the viral video of a floor cleaner dancing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland just made our day. The floor cleaner, CJ Miller, stole the show bopping to the Queen anthem, “I Want to Break Free,” with his trusty dance partner: a mop.

📺 What we’re watching this weekend ... |
|
|
|
WNBA:
Friday, July 31
Fever @ Fire—10 p.m. ET; ION
Sunday, Aug. 2
Fever @ Lynx—1 p.m. ET; ABC
Of note: Caitlin Clark is probable to play in Friday’s game against the Fire due to a nagging back injury. It’s the same issue that forced her to miss four games earlier this year. The Fever (18-10) will need her to be healthy (and to avoid any technical foul trouble) as they start to close out the second half of their season.
That’s a wrap for today. See ya Monday!
