Hey runners, in today's newsletter, U.S. marathon culture is evolving in some big ways, and some genuinely odd ones.
St. Louis will host the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on March 25, 2028, returning the race to the city where the Olympic marathon was first run on American soil all the way back in 1904. Out west, the California International Marathon is doubling its field for 2027, adding a second wave that'll push capacity toward 20,000 runners and extending the six-hour cutoff by up to an hour. And in a twist nobody saw coming, treadmill running is getting its first World Championship — World Athletics and Technogym are launching RUN X, a 5km global competition staged on connected treadmills with a $100,000 prize pool and a March 2027 final in Italy.
The BolderBoulder DQ saga continues to unfold, with the race director now contradicting Emad Bashir-Mohammed's Instagram explanation and pointing to women's winner Elise Cranny following the exact same rule. And in the weirdest story you'll read this week, Canadian dairy brand Lactantia has built a running vest that turns jostled cream into butter mid-run. Yes, really.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff — 21 things to know before your first half marathon, how to avoid bonking on race day, and an honest look at when a healthy running habit starts tipping into addiction.
World Athletics and Technogym have opened registration for RUN X, a 5km global competition staged on connected treadmills in gyms, universities and hotels. The first final is set for March 2027 in Italy.
Sacramento's flat, fast marathon plans to add a second wave, pushing capacity toward 20,000 runners and extending the six-hour cutoff by up to an hour.
The follow-up to the blockbuster Superblast 2 is here, and as our colleague Alex can confirm (see his video review), the SUPERBLAST 3 is a total beast.
The SUPERBLAST 3 stacks ASICS's race-proven technology with a new Trampoline Pod to provide an underfoot feel that is bouncy and responsive. Whether you are grinding through tempo work or just want to make your easy miles feel fun, this is an ideal 'why choose' shoe.
A response from the race contradicts Emad Bashir-Mohammed's Instagram explanation. Women's winner Elise Cranny had the same bib situation on Sunday afternoon and followed the rule.
Senior Editor Alex Cyr tests the ASICS Novablast 6: the running brand's latest and most aggressive daily training shoe to date. The sneaker is faster than ever before, but is it comfortable? Is it durable? Is it worth the money? We answer those questions and more.
