Applications Are Open for the Renew America's Nonprofits Grant  The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through the Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP), announced that applications are open for the Renew America's Nonprofits grant. This $45 million funding opportunity demonstrates a first-of-its-kind engagement between DOE and the nonprofits sector and recognizes the central role that nonprofits play in American's lives, as well as their potential significance in the nation's clean energy transition. Awards will support projects to reduce energy use in buildings owned and operated by 501(c)(3)s, reducing emissions and utilities costs in these vital institutions so that savings can be redirected to mission-critical work serving communities. Biden-Harris Administration Announces $4.5 Million to Build K-12 Staff Capacity and Lower Energy Costs for Schools  On May 5, 2023, SCEP announced 25 Phase 1 Winners of the Energy Champions Leading the Advancement of Sustainable Schools Prize (Energy CLASS Prize).
The Energy CLASS Prize is a two-phase, $4.5 million competitive award promoting energy management in school districts across America. The competition was designed to help some of the nation's highest-need K-12 schools make critical clean energy and health improvements by establishing, training, and supporting energy managers—or champions—in their districts.

DOE Announces $7.75 Million Investment in HBCUs to Support STEM Workforce  DOE announced the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Clean Energy Education Prize. The $7.75 million prize competition will support the creation of clean energy community networks to inspire the next generation of students to work in science, technology, engineering, and technology (STEM) fields related to clean energy. The prize is open to all 100+ HBCU institutions across the United States, and schools are eligible to compete in one or both prize tracks: - The Inspire Track supports the development and expansion of HBCU-hosted clean energy summer or academic break programs for K-12 and community college students. Submissions open for this track in May 2023 and close in August 2023.
- The Partnership Track supports building partnerships between HBCUs and other universities to provide opportunities that will equip HBCU students with the skills needed to succeed in the clean energy industry. Submissions open for the Partnership Track in September 2023.

Each of the technical assistance centers will receive at least $10 million to remove barriers and improve accessibility for communities with environmental justice concerns. With this critical investment, these centers will provide training and other assistance to build capacity for navigating federal grant application systems, writing strong grant proposals, and effectively managing grant funding. In addition, these centers will provide guidance on community engagement, meeting facilitation, and translation and interpretation services for limited English-speaking participants. Each of the technical assistance centers will also create and manage communication channels to ensure all communities have direct access to resources and information.
