Medical leave is used to oust Google workers who raise racial and gender discrimination, current and former employees say

Current and former employees of the company describe experiences echoing those of two prominent Black women pushed out at the end of last year.

March 7, 2021 Google uses medical leave to oust workers alleging discrimination, employees say Nearly two dozen current and former Google employees have told NBC News about their experiences or experiences they have heard of where workers who complained about racism or sexism in the workplace were advised by human resources to seek mental health counseling or take medical leave to address their mental health — despite their mental well-being having nothing to do with their complaints.   "Going on leave is so normalized. I can think of 10 people that I know of in the last year that have gone on mental health leave because of the way they were treated," said one former Google employee, who is a person of color.
