Request for Information on Offshore Wind Transmission System Integration Research Needs

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) is seeking information from the public on research needs for integration of large-scale offshore wind energy generation into the transmission grid. In addition to input on overall research priorities, topics of interest include technical means to enhance transmission utilization and mitigate congestion; updates to system integration studies and analyses in view of anticipated offshore wind development; and priorities for improvements to data, models, and analytical tools. Responses are due Jan. 24, 2021.

This RFI is intended to inform WETO's strategic planning on research aimed at lowering the cost of integrating offshore wind power into the grid, while enhancing system reliability and resiliency. Learn more about WETO's systems integration R&D activities, which are coordinated with other DOE technology offices through the Grid Modernization Initiative.

This RFI also supports DOE's Energy Storage Grand Challenge, which draws on the extensive research capabilities of the DOE National Laboratories, universities, and industry to accelerate the development of energy-storage technologies and sustain American global leadership in the energy storage technologies of the future.

U.S. Departments of the Interior and Energy Launch New Collaboration for Improved Safety and Environmental Stewardship in Offshore Energy Exploration and Production Operations

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and DOE have issued a FOA for up to $40 million, over a 5-year period, for the Operation and Maintenance of the Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI 2.0) to support additional improvements in safety and environmental sustainability in offshore energy exploration and production.

Through a 5-year project agreement, the agencies will jointly support a world-class program of R&D related to offshore oil, natural gas, wind, and marine hydrokinetic energy production, with a focus on safety, environmental monitoring, and operational improvements. The institution receiving the award will be responsible for managing OESI, providing input on yearly objectives, carrying out the R&D program, and conducting certain work to further the attainment of those objectives. 13th Wind Wildlife Research Meeting

Online: December 1–4, 2020

The National Wind Coordinating Collaborative's (NWCC's) 13th biennial Wind Wildlife Research Meeting (WWRM) provides a forum for wind-wildlife stakeholders—including wind energy developers, academics, research biologists, environmental consultants, NGOs, and officials from local, state, and federal governmental agencies—to share the latest scientific findings relating to addressing impacts to wildlife from wind energy. The U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Energy Technologies Office provides support for developing the meeting proceedings. Proceedings from previous research meetings are available on the NWCC website.

Competitiveness Improvement Project Virtual Informational Workshop

Online: Tuesday, December 8, 2020, 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. MT 

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has issued a Special Notice regarding a request for proposals (RFP) under the Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) for distributed wind.

Focused on small and medium wind turbine technology R&D, the CIP is an annual solicitation that awards cost-shared subcontracts and technical support via a competitive process to:

  1. Innovate optimized designs for increased energy production and grid support;
  2. Conduct turbine and component testing to national standards to verify performance and safety; and
  3. Develop advanced manufacturing processes to reduce hardware costs.

The RFP is planned for release in early 2021, and NREL invites interested parties to attend a virtual workshop on Dec. 8, 2020 to learn more about the CIP and the RFP process.

FY 2021 SBIR/STTR Phase I Release 2 FOA Webinar

Online: December 18, 2020

On Nov. 16, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program announced the release of its FY 2021 SBIR/STTR Phase I topics. The SBIR/STTR FY 2021 Phase I Release 2 Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is scheduled for release on Dec. 14.

FY 2021 SBIR/STTR Phase I Release 2 Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Webinar is scheduled to take place on Friday, December 18, 2020. 

The webinar will cover:

  • Federal SBIR/STTR Programs,
  • DOE SBIR/STTR Technology Areas,
  • DOE SBIR/STTR Application and Award Process as it relates to the FY 2021 Phase I Release 2 FOA, and
  • Questions & Answers.

Registration information will be posted one week prior to the webinar on the DOE SBIR website.

DOE researchers have won 38 of the 100 awards given out this year by R&D World. The annual R&D 100 Awards are given in recognition of exceptional technologies developed during the previous year. Call for Teams To Compete in the 2022 Collegiate Wind Competition

DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released a request for proposals for student teams interested in competing in the Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC) in May 2022. The competition challenges students to design, build, and test a model wind turbine and plan and financially analyze a wind power plant. The request for proposals is open for applications through December 8, 2020. Interested students and faculty can learn more about the competition and the application requirements.
