Police in Hong Kong have made the first arrests under a sweeping new national security law, less than 24 hours after it was passed by mainland China. Amid dramatic scenes, thousands of protesters took to the streets on Wednesday, which also marked the 23rd anniversary of the territory's handover from the U.K. to China. The law is seen as the most significant change since Hong Kong left British rule in 1997. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that the law was a "clear and serious" breach of the handover agreement between the two countries and said he would honor a promise made earlier this month to provide passports and a path to citizenship to as many as 3 million Hong Kong residents. |
