Goooooood morning, sports fans! Brigid Kennedy here, back for more of your regularly scheduled Monday morning programming (i.e., your favorite sports recap newsletter on the web).
Now, this is normally the part where I would say something exciting about my weekend, but if I’m being honest, I didn’t have a very thrilling go of it this time around. I think I needed it, though. Sometimes, a whole lot of nothing is good for the soul. Still, consider forwarding this to a friend who needs to get out more. Shame is a powerful drug.

AROUND THE W: Well, it was certainly not a quiet one in the WNBA this weekend, when Fever guard Sophie Cunningham found herself at the center of yet another headline-making debacle. It all started during Indiana’s game against Chicago, during which Cunningham, who is white, drew a Flagrant 2 foul from the Sky’s DiJonai Carrington, who is Black. The pair were pretty testy in the moments immediately following, but the refs soon hit Carrington with the ejection, and that was that. Once off the court, however, Carrington took to social media and posted, “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever,” on Threads, purportedly implying that her exit was not so much about the flagrant as it was who it had happened to. … Later, Cunningham said she believed the foul was “absolutely” intentional, and noted that she did not believe race had anything to do with the refs’ decision, arguing that she had been tossed last season for doing “the same thing.” … And that wasn’t the only moment of note from the Fever-Sky game, either. Star Caitlin Clark was handed what would have been her eighth technical of the season after making contact with a referee on the sidelines. The league later rescinded the call, but it would have triggered a one-game suspension for Clark had it stood. … And finally, in lighter news, the Lynx’s Kayla McBride made some sweet WNBA history during Minnesota’s win vs. Dallas on Sunday night, when she became the first women’s player to sink 10 treys in a single game. McBuckets!
NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION: Now, a bit of news from the MNBA. … To start, what’s going on with Russell Westbrook? The man is still a free agent. So where might he end up? We took a look. … Speaking of free agents, the Nuggets would be wise to keep restricted FA Peyton Watson in Colorado, and here’s why. … Finally, rest in peace to former NBA player and coach Don Nelson, who died Sunday at the age of 86. In honor of a life well lived, Blake Silverman highlighted the Hall of Famer’s indelible and undeniable impact on both the game and the league we love.
TOSS THE PIGSKIN: Lastly, some football-related headlines for your perusal. … For one, NFL players still don’t want newly minted Commanders receiver Stefon Diggs dating their sisters. … And for another, Maxx Crosby’s whole “aggressive during practice” schtick has run its course. … Over in the NCAA, meanwhile, Indiana football is enjoying an unexpected boost from that fifth-year eligibility lawsuit. Curt Cignetti, man. The guy just wins.

Some really great content to begin your morning ...
AT THE CENTER OF THE RING: Kayla McBride had herself a wonderful night on Sunday, as we highlighted above. But she did not just make W history; she also posted a career-high 43 points, two of which were the result of this nuts circus shot. You go girl.
STAY GOLDEN: Alright, this video has legitimately nothing to do with sports, but it is the best thing I saw all weekend. It’s about a golden retriever and a duck who became best friends. Yes, I cried. Yes, you will too. And maybe forward it to your friend who needs to get out more, idk.

WNBA:
Tempo @ Dream—8 p.m. ET; Peacock, NBC Sports
Sky @ Storm—10 p.m. ET; USA Network
Tonight, the Sky are back for their first game since the Cunningham-Carrington debacle, only this time vs. the bottom-dwelling Storm (seriously, Seattle has lost 11 games in a row). But first, we’ll see the also-struggling Tempo go up against the sixth-place Dream.
MLB:
Phillies @ Cardinals—7:45 p.m. ET; FS1, MLB.TV
We’ve got Phils vs. Cards for this eve’s nationally televised match. Philadelphia has won six of its last 10 and is sitting second in the NL East with a 63-56 record. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have won five of their last 10 and are currently .500 on the season.
That’s all I’ve got for ya. As usual, you’ll have a Wednesday Write-Up in your inboxes at 6:05 a.m. ET come mid-week. I look forward to chatting with you then!
