THIS LEAGUE: It’s kind of wild how much news the NBA generates even in the offseason. Honestly, if things continue like this, opening night will be here before we know it! Alright, let’s review the big headlines from this weekend … For starters, the Timberwolves have a new controlling owner following a sale to businessman Marc Stad (what is it with these sports teams changing hands?!). Here’s what you need to know about him. … And speaking of opening night, Blake Silverman identified five players who could find themselves on a new roster by the time October rolls around. (To note: Klay Thompson, one of those five, is now with the Heat. So clearly Blake was onto something.) … And while we’re on the topic of Klay, former Dallas Mavericks guard and enemy of all Megan Thee Stallion fans, here’s a look at his fit with his new squad in Miami. … Finally, over in the Western Conference, the Nuggets are being weird. The team has taken several interesting swings as of late (the recent signing of DeMar DeRozan among them) as it deals with the effects of the second apron. But will any of these decisions pay off? Liam McKeone takes a look.
CALM BEFORE THE STORM: I wish we could jump right into regular season action, but the NFL preseason persists. On that note, Mike Kadlick identified a few of the players who are looking particularly strong during this preparatory period, as well as a few who are looking particularly … chilly. I’ll let you guess where he placed Deshaun Watson. … Speaking of freezing cold showings, J.J. McCarthy proved he still has a ways to go after a tough outing against Baltimore on Saturday. ... Also, the Saints and the 49ers had themselves a little late-night trade on Sunday. We've got the grades for ya.
SI GRAB BAG: Finally, a little bit of everything to round things out. … Even ex-ESPN stars are questioning the network’s constant promotion of Pat McAfee. … LIV Golf continues to be the saddest, most soulless league on the planet (though it might not be around much longer). … And Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz are teaming up for some must-watch doubles action at the U.S. Open.

It’s always fun when the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the league face off, as is the case tonight at 8 p.m. ET. Don’t get it twisted, though—Minnesota is still the clear frontrunner with six more wins than Golden State, and will have a shot at clinching the No. 1 seed in the playoffs this evening. Later, we’ll watch as the Dream, also playoff-bound, go up against the Sparks, who have already been eliminated from contention.
MLB:
Rays @ Tigers—6:40 p.m. ET; FS1
The postseason remains a possibility for Detroit, but they’ll need to show up strong vs. the very impressive Rays, who sit atop the AL East, to make that happen. The first game of the three-night homestand begins at 6:40 p.m. ET.
