Hello, friends! This is Tom Dierberger from Sports Illustrated’s NBA team, pinch hitting this morning for my pals Kristen Wong and Brigid Kennedy. You know, Brigid’s newsletter on Wednesday got me thinking: Summer is almost over and I, yet again, have not improved at all at golf. In fact, I was putting so poorly the other day that I switched up my grip in the middle of a round. That’s never a good sign. I need to hurry up with this newsletter and get to the range.
Forward this to someone who wouldn’t have an issue with someone recording them at the driving range. (Bryson DeChambeau will not be getting this edition of the newsletter, I guess.)

THE CAVS AND CAV NOTS: August is typically the slowest month on the NBA calendar, but don’t tell that to the Cleveland Cavaliers. … The Cavs traded away Dennis Schröder last week, and then turned around Wednesday and acquired Peyton Watson from the Nuggets in a massive five-team deal that officially went through last night. … Sports Illustrated’s Liam McKeone graded that trade, and he also wrote about how the Cavs’ all-in mentality with this roster is starting to make him sweat. Read that fantastic column here. … If your favorite NBA team hasn’t made a big move this month, don’t worry, there’s still some talent out there to sign.
WHERE’D YOU GO, I MISS YOU SO: The Ketel Marte saga continues. In case you missed it (or, should I say, SI:CYMI), Marte was a surprise no-show for the Diamondbacks’ matchup against the Red Sox on Monday … and then again on Tuesday and Wednesday. … Arizona’s team president even admitted he’s unsure what’s going on. As of last night, it appears both sides are now on the same page, and Marte will head to the injured list. … Ryan Phillips and Karl Rasmussen broke down that odd story here. … Elsewhere in baseball, Rasmussen wrote that he believes Paul Skenes should be shut down for the season, and he also predicted the 2026 All-MLB teams. … Also, Fernando Tatis Jr. is Fernando Tatis Jr. again. Yay.
SHORT LIVED: It’s been a rough week, er, month, er, year, er, existence for LIV Golf. Aside from Bryson DeChambeau’s latest aforementioned tantrum, the league’s PR department (if they have one?) continues to reside in The Bad Place. … Earlier this week, a small media company announced it is suing LIV Golf because the league owes them over $1 million for their work during a recent media day. … LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil responded with a very unhelpful word salad. … Read those comments here and prepare to roll your eyes.

A couple of fun posts to ease you into the weekend …
MEET THE TUGBOAT: Giants reliever Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, a 6’1”, 250-pound beauty, made his MLB debut Wednesday night and was nearly perfect through two innings. Check out this cool video overlay of him pitching in that game combined with footage from his Little League World Series appearance in 2015. Even better, his family all wore captain hats to watch “Tugboat” make his debut. It’s only fitting that he pitches a few hundred feet away from McCovey Cove.
HE COULD GO ALL THE WAY: “Football is so back” is something uttered in our Slack channel often this time of year, but it really is back, guys. Watch this 83-yard punt return for a TD by 49ers receiver Jacob Cowing and tell me it’s not back. That’s right. You can’t. Goosebumps.
GET IN THE BLUE TENT: This video of a robot running in a full sprint on a track in Beijing is terrifying … until it smashes into a wall and collapses onto the ground in such a cartoonish way I couldn’t help but laugh. Robot, if you are reading this, I’m sorry. But I’m really not sorry. Let’s stop building robots that can sprint at speeds of 50 mph, please.

MLB
Braves @ Brewers—4:10 p.m. ET; MLB.tv
Jacob Misiorowski is must-watch television every time he toes the rubber. The NL Cy Young award front-runner owns a 12–5 record, 1.75 ERA and league-high 210 strikeouts entering his start Friday against Atlanta.
WNBA
Lynx @ Mystics—7:30 p.m. ET; iON, WNBA League Pass
Speaking of must-see TV, Olivia Miles. “The Spectacle” is quite the spectacle, indeed.
NFL
Jets @ Steelers—7 p.m. ET Friday; ESPN
It won’t be a revenge game for Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is sitting out Week 2 of the preseason, but hey, it’s still football.
That’s all for today. Have fun watching sports this weekend.
