Hey runners, in today's newsletter, Western States delivered a weekend for the record books, with prototype shoes carrying the podium and a debutante rewriting the women's course record.
Vincent Bouillard rewrote the Western States 100 record books on Saturday, going sub-14 hours and running down the leader in the final 15 miles to become the first French runner ever to win the sport's oldest 100-miler. On the women's side, 30-year-old Jenn Lichter broke Courtney Dauwalter's course record by 88 seconds in her very first 100-mile race, with Riley Brady and Marianne Hogan rounding out an all-North American podium. And in a sign of just how fast the trail shoe arms race is moving, four of the six podium finishers raced in unreleased prototypes. We've broken down what we know about each shoe on each foot.
Looking ahead, the reigning men's and women's marathon world champions will line up together at the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS on August 30, in what organizers are calling the strongest elite field in the race's history.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: 16 ways to make running fun again when it starts feeling like a chore, whether running can actually build muscle (and how to train smarter if it's a priority), and a full guide on making the leap from 10K to half marathon, complete with our expert training plans.

The Wahoo KICKR RUN — built for serious runners
If you've ever resented your treadmill for feeling more like cardio equipment than a real training tool, the Wahoo KICKR RUN is the antidote.
The KICKR RUN pairs natively with COROS watches so your indoor miles carry the same weight as your outdoor ones, runs on a powered RunFree mode that adapts belt speed to your pace automatically, and is engineered around runner-specific geometry: long deck, soft landing, near-silent motor. The most thoughtfully-designed treadmill we've seen for serious runners.
The Frenchman went sub-14 hours, ran down the leader in the last 15 miles, and became the first runner from his country to win the sport's oldest 100-miler.
