Hello, sports fans! It’s me, Brigid Kennedy, back in the SI:CYMI kitchen after a few days away. I’ve cooked up a good one this morning. Bon appétit!
Before we begin, a bit of housekeeping: we’ll be switching up the cadence of this newsletter for the next few months. Rather than sending something every day, we’ll be in your inboxes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the fall. We know things will be a little slower as we enter the dog days of summer, and this change allows us to give you a worthwhile read while still being respectful of your email real estate. Expect the SI:CYMI format you’re used to begin and end the week, but a little bit of everything on Wednesdays. It’s going to be very fun. And hopefully, it will give us the chance to make the newsletter even better before we get back to daily sends in September.
As always, thank you for reading. Now, let’s get going!

WYNDHAM’S REDEMPTION ARC: One year after his reputation-tarnishing meltdown at Oakmont, Wyndham Clark is your 2026 U.S. Open winner. Love him or hate him, he played some incredible golf. I mean, he had a six-shot lead heading into the final round. … By the end, Sam Burns came close to forcing a playoff, but Clark found a way to tune out the haters (of which there were plenty, by the way) to win with a final score of four-under. … He also shared an adorable moment with his dad, who hopped on a red-eye flight to see his son win another major. … And if that heartfelt interaction didn’t at least start to temper your perhaps negative opinion on him, you have to give him props for how he responded to the near-constant heckling and mood out on the course. … It’s fun to have a villain to root against, but Clark really was not the guy. Just ask SI’s Brian Giuffra; he walked 20 holes with him.
SUBPAR: Even with Clark’s seemingly preordained win, the scene at Shinnecock still had its share of struggles and surprises. … LIV Golf’s Joaquin Niemann was hit with a two-stroke penalty after throwing a club in frustration. … Dustin Johnson completely fell apart after a dream start and wound up finishing T32. … And Bryson DeChambeau missed yet another cut (along with these eight other big names).
ON THE MARK: And there were pros (pun intended) worth noting, too. … For one thing, amateurs Miles Russell and Jackson Koivun have us excited about the future of golf. … Russell, for one, shared a really wonderful moment with his dad on the 18th hole. … And lots of players walked away with their pockets padded. … We’ve got the full list of winners and losers here.
BEST OF THE REST: A few other headlines worth knowing. … Serena Williams is now competing in the singles draw at Wimbledon, in addition to her doubles appearance with Venus. We are sooooo back. … In the NBA, the Hawks are bringing back CJ McCollum on a one-year extension; here’s why that’s a good choice. … A big bombshell over in the NHL—the Panthers are acquiring Brady Tkachuk from the Senators, a massive trade that unites the 26-year-old with his brother, Matthew. … Rafael Devers had a pretty embarrassing reaction when the Giants moved to replace him with a pinch-runner on Sunday. … And here’s a look at what happened in that verbal altercation between Tarik Skubal and White Sox pitcher Mike Vasil earlier in the weekend.

1,2,3, DCC!: If, like me, you love nothing more than Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts—the docuseries chronicling the inner workings of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders—I hope you’ll read my interview with Reece Weaver, one of the show’s biggest stars and a huge focus for season three, out now.
NO LOVE LOST: When Josh Hart gets a microphone … you know he’s about to say something good. I love it. During a live taping of his and Jalen Brunson’s The Roommates Show podcast on Friday night, the Knicks guard shared a particularly candid and blunt interpretation of the Spurs’ reaction to winning the Western Conference finals. He also made sure to get an apology out of Stephen A. Smith, which isn’t something a lot of people can do.

📺 What we’re watching tonight ... |
|
|
|
WNBA:
Mercury @ Fever—8 p.m. ET; USA Network
This is the first meeting between Phoenix and Indiana this season, but also the first of two straight (they will play again on Wednesday).
MLB:
Braves @ Padres—10 p.m. ET; ESPN
Speaking of inaugural meetings, Atlanta and San Diego will link up for their first series this year, starting Monday. Notably, the Braves’ 48–28 record is the best in MLB.
World Cup:
Argentina @ Austria—1 p.m. ET; Fox
I’d be remiss if I didn’t let everyone know they’ll have the chance to watch Messi play soccer today. This is the team’s second group stage game, and they’re up against Austria.
That’s all I’ve got for ya. And remember, we’ll see you back here on Wednesday. Cheers!
