Morning! This is Kristen Wong from Sports Illustrated. If you ever laid awake at night wondering who was worse: Skip Bayless, Colin Cowherd or Stephen A. Smith, just know the answer is unequivocally Alexi Lalas. Speaking of pains-in-the-asses, screw hydration breaks at the World Cup. Soccer is a game of two halves, not quarters!! PSA: the Telemundo broadcast stream doesn’t show ads during those breaks. More GOOOOOOOOOOLs and less Alexi, please and thank you. Anyways, let’s get into the “American” sports.
Forward this to someone who is passionately hate-watching Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. They know ball.

U.S. VS THEM: The U.S. Open is officially underway, and SI’s golf experts have you covered on everything you need to know about the third major of the 2026 season. First off, Tom Dierberger took a look at three of the biggest storylines at this year’s tournament, including two-time champ Bryson DeChambeau’s future in the sport. … SI’s Brian Giuffra offered a glimpse into the best holes at Shinnecock, where golf fans apparently “want carnage.” … Grand Slam-chasing Scottie Scheffler suffered a slow start in the first round, but Andy Nesbitt explained why the rest of the field should still be worried. … Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, got off to a strong start during which he developed a kind of toxic relationship with the wind. … Who’s actually going to win the U.S. Open this year? Recent history narrows it down to Scheffler and three other golfers. … The tournament’s winner is set to take home a life-changing chunk of change, but the rest of the players won’t leave empty-handed (unless you’re an amateur). … Missed the first day and want to know what happened? Here is Tom and Andy’s rundown of the tourney’s winners and losers so far (TLDR: Wyndham > Wind). … A minor league baseball team forfeited a game on Pride Night because players refused to wear jerseys that featured rainbow sleeves. Love how far our country has come. … Gambling addict Brendan Sorsby is one of the most talked-about names this NFL offseason. Here’s what seven NFL coaches had to say about the ex-Cincinnati QB. … SI’s Mike Kadlick wrote an insightful piece about how the World Cup has exposed the NFL’s turf problem, with a sticking point being the money it would cost the league to maintain natural grass fields.
NEW YORK OR NOWHERE: More than two million reportedly attended the Knicks’ championship parade in NYC on Thursday. For reference, that’s more than the populations of two countries competing at the World Cup (Curaçao and Cape Verde). If you were one of the two million, we hope you got home okay. If not, here’s a recap of the best moments from one of New York City’s most joyous days in history. … Plenty of celebrities were at the parade, too (we love you, Mariska Hargitay). … We heard at least one Trae Young jersey was set on fire during the orange-and-blue festivities. Where will the soon-to-be free agent land in the NBA? … The Victor Wembanyama handshake snub saga isn’t going away anytime soon. … SI’s Eva Geitheim ranked the NFL’s worst-to-first candidates, with the NY Giants looking capable of winning their division next season after hiring John Harbaugh.

These things made us feel less dead inside …
MAMDANI FOR PRESIDENT: Yeah, we voted for the right guy. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani just gave a speech at the Knicks’ championship parade that would rouse Martin Luther King Jr. in his grave. Watch it here.
ELMO BULLIED INTO SUBMISSION: Remember when Elmo dropped his very bad NBA Finals take about hoping “both teams have fun”? Yeah, that furry high-pitched red monster is making up for it now with a fitting punishment: The walk of shame in the mob-filled streets of New York. Think before you betray your New York City sports team again, Elmo.
BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP: French tennis player Corentin Moutet did not give a f— about his on-court interview at Queen’s Club earlier this week. After Moutet defeated compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a three-set thriller in London, he simply could not stop cursing. At first, it was accidental. When his interviewer politely asked him to not swear on live television, he followed that up with three more F-bombs, and then another profane triad. We’ve gotta hand it to the French, they truly do not give a f—.

If there was ever a time I wish I was unemployed, it would be this summer. Just look at these beautiful games. The ones I am personally invested in are USA vs. the Aussies (can Poch’s side keep up the tempo?), Netherlands vs. Sweden (a.k.a. Isak vs. van Dijk), and Spain vs. Saudi Arabia (Lamine Yamal, you are our only hope). Cheers to an action-packed weekend of soccer!
That’s a wrap for today. See ya Sunday!
