Hey runners, in today's newsletter, the records are tumbling on both ends of the spectrum, from 800 meters all the way out to 85.8 kilometers.
Comrades 2026 delivered two history-making performances. Gerda Steyn won her fifth Comrades and smashed her own Up Run record in 5:44:53, walking away with a record R2.322 million payday. On the men's side, 27-year-old data scientist George Kusche took down an 18-year-old Up Run record on his second-ever attempt, finishing the 85.8km race in 5:16:06. Over at Hayward Field, Arkansas junior Sanu Jallow-Lockhart broke Athing Mu's NCAA 800m record with a 1:56.85, while Alabama's Doris Lemngole crossed first in the 5,000m only to be disqualified for stepping inside the curb, handing the title to New Mexico's Marion Jepngetich.
In doping news, Cam Hanes sat down with Joe Rogan to share his side of the BPC-157 story, walking through his foot injury, his peptide use, and his ongoing disagreement with USADA, who he confirmed has been in touch about the case.
And as always, we round things out with the practical stuff: our experts' ranking of the best running shoes after hundreds of miles of testing, a race day gear checklist to take the panic out of race morning, six common causes of post-run knee pain, and how long your marathon taper should actually be.
The South African ultra-runner crossed the line in 5:44:53 and walked away with a record R2.322 million (about $142,700) payday after running, in her own words, as if it were her last race.
The Alabama junior crossed first in 15:11.71 but was disqualified for running inside the curb. New Mexico's Marion Jepngetich was awarded the championship.
The follow-up to the blockbuster Superblast 2 is here, and as our colleague Alex can confirm (see his video review), the SUPERBLAST 3 is a total beast.
The SUPERBLAST 3 stacks ASICS's race-proven technology with a new Trampoline Pod to provide an underfoot feel that is bouncy and responsive. Whether you are grinding through tempo work or just want to make your easy miles feel fun, this is an ideal 'why choose' shoe.
Nothing fuels race morning anxiety more than realizing you’ve forgotten essential gear. At that point, scrambling to find last-minute items isn’t an option—especially with early start times and limited time to pack.
The 27-year-old data scientist ran down a cramping Mbuti Mollo with 10km to go, finishing the 85.8km race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 5:16:06 and pocketing more than R2 million (about $123,000).
The 58-year-old laid out a detailed timeline of his foot injury, his peptide use, and his current training. He also confirmed USADA has been in touch about the case, and walked through his procedural disagreement with it.
Jimmy Whelan raced the Giro d'Italia, wore the EF Education First jersey in the World Tour, and beat Pogačar in a U23 race. Then he broke his pelvis, lost his contract, and messaged his boss from a hospital bed in Europe to say he was done. Less than a year later, he ran a 61-minute half marathon on his professional running debut at Valencia, 13th on the Australian all-time list. He's now signed with Salomon, based in Barcelona, coached by Andy Henderson (also coach to Phil Sessemann), and openly chasing the Australian Olympic marathon team for LA 2028.
