Even with all the computers in the world run for a million years – you couldn't calculate all positions. Google's Deepmind team trained an AI called AlphaGo to play the game. Grandmasters in GO don't rely on pattern recognition. They say it comes down to a much deeper understanding – they even describe it as "intuitive." As a result… no one ever thought AI would win at the game. There was simply no way there would be a database large enough to plan for all the variables. So… they did something different. They created two versions of the AI… And allowed it to play itself. Millions… and Millions of times. As a result… it trained itself to play. Then… they tested the AI against a human with 18 world championships. At one point in the match – Move 37 – the AI made a move so surprising… everyone thought it was a mistake. Even the Google team thought it was a glitch… and the AI would lose. The match went on… and the human player ended up resigning. Looking back… The "weird" move 37 is what gave the AI a victory. It was a move so unorthodox… there's NO record of it being used in any other match in history. Humans have never thought of it… and the team at Google doesn't even fully understand how AI came up with the strategy. That's the power of AI now. It can now come up with creative solutions that we wouldn't even consider. And that's exactly what happened with us.
