Sports: What to read and watch

Read about the Phillies' J.T. Realmuto, watch college football and playoff soccer.

What to Read This Weekend

J.T. Realmuto gets a lot of attention for his batting, but he is a superb defensive catcher as well. He is a 2022 finalist for a Gold Glove.Harry How/Getty Images

J.T. Realmuto, the catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, is a Gold Glove winner and perhaps the most productive hitter at baseball's most demanding position. He hits for average and power, runs exceptionally well and has helped lead his team to the World Series.

Like those of many athletes, his family provided a blueprint for his success. But baseball wasn't the family business, Tyler Kepner writes; wrestling was.

One of Realmuto's uncles, John Smith, is among the most decorated United States wrestlers in history. Two other uncles, Lee Roy and Pat Smith, were N.C.A.A. Division I champions, as were two cousins, Mark and Chris Perry.

"Being so close to them, and seeing those guys at Thanksgiving and Christmas and being around them all year long, watching them have that much success on a national stage, it just makes it kind of realistic for you as a child," Realmuto said. "And then, you set those goals and they're not just dreams; you're seeing somebody right in front of you actually reach those goals. It makes it a little more realistic for you."

What to Watch This Weekend

Since Coach Robert Saleh said he was "taking receipts" of the Jets' doubters, the team has won five of six games; the Jets are a half-game back of the Buffalo Bills in the A.F.C. East.Adam Hunger/Associated Press

All times are Eastern.

Football

Are the Jets for real? At 5-2, they're off to their best start since 2010, and their players have a brashness and joyfulness to them — exemplified by cornerback Sauce Gardner — that just might change the culture of the franchise. They play at 1 p.m. Sunday on CBS against the up-and-down Patriots, who fell to the Bears on Monday night.

College football gives us a top-15 showdown when No. 2 Ohio State visits Happy Valley to take on No. 13 Penn State (Saturday, noon, Fox), and the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party returns when No. 1 Georgia faces Florida in Jacksonville (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., CBS).

Baseball

The Phillies took Game 1 of the World Series; can the Houston Astros bounce back? Saturday's Game 2 (8:03 p.m., Fox) pits starting pitchers Framber Valdez of the Astros and Zack Wheeler of the Phillies.

Soccer

The N.W.S.L. season comes down to this: The Portland Thorns take on the Kansas City Current for all the marbles in the league final (Saturday, 7:59 p.m., CBS).

Major League Soccer's conference finals are also this weekend, with Los Angeles F.C. facing Austin F.C. (Sunday, 1 p.m., ABC) and Philadelphia Union meeting New York City F.C. (Sunday, 8 p.m., FS1) to set the M.L.S. Cup final.
