Austin III's Meeting With Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Oct. 1, 2022 On October 1, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III met with his Australian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, in Honolulu to discuss the regional security situation and advancing defense cooperation between the United States and Australia. Secretary Austin shared his appreciation for Australia's contributions to upholding regional and global security, and both leaders agreed to continue working bilaterally and multilaterally to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The two leaders exchanged views on how to accelerate and deepen bilateral defense cooperation on force posture and defense technology collaboration, and reviewed progress under the trilateral Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) partnership. They confirmed that they would advance U.S. and Australian defense cooperation at the upcoming Australia-U.S. Ministerial (AUSMIN) meeting.
