The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was long considered the gold standard of public health institutions. But a series of public communications missteps throughout the pandemic deeply tarnished the agency, from its seeming inability to answer basic scientific questions to its sluggish responses to the rapidly changing pandemic.
Seven CDC employees who spoke to NBC News expressed their frustrations over those missteps, and one described a "holy crap" moment when they realized the agency would need to reverse its mask guidance in mid-2021.
