EXCLUSIVE: How a cattle theft sting operation snared the top elected official in Loving County, Texas

A Texas special ranger got a tip in early 2021 that Loving County Judge Skeet Jones and his ranch hands had rounded up stray livestock to sell at auction without notifying the sheriff, as required by state law.

What followed was a yearlong investigation, detailed in documents obtained by NBC News, and a sting operation — involving a microchipped reddish-brown cow, her calf and a black yearling bull — that led to Jones being charged with cattle-rustling.
