What to Read This Weekend

For seven years, Sonny Leon, 32, has crisscrossed Ohio and Kentucky and Indiana and West Virginia to ride up to 1,100 races a year at casino racetracks, competing before dozens of people, rather than thousands, and spending lonely nights away from his family.

In May, Leon became a big name in the sport when he steered Rich Strike to victory in the Kentucky Derby.

His victory resonated in jockeys' rooms at minor league tracks everywhere. It was Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson or the Jets beating the Colts in Super Bowl III.

He's still happiest on small-time ovals, he said.

What to Watch This Weekend

Hockey

The Rangers lost Game 5 of their conference final series at home, where they had previously been nearly unshakable. Trailing three games to two, they now must face the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa in Game 6 (Saturday, 8 p.m., ESPN).

Horse Racing

The Preakness winner, Early Voting, is missing, but the 80-1 Kentucky Derby winner, Rich Strike, is back for the Belmont Stakes. The Times reporter Joe Drape picks him to win, while Melissa Hoppert likes Mo Donegal, the Wood Memorial winner, who has also been resting since the Derby (Saturday, 6:44 p.m., NBC).

Baseball

College softball's superteam, Oklahoma, has already won its World Series. College baseball's superteam, Tennessee, plays in the final 16 this weekend against Notre Dame (Game 2, Saturday, 2 p.m., ESPN).
