Sports: What to watch and read

Watch the Final Four, read how Bruce Arians gave the NFL a diversity blueprint it shouldn't ignore.

What to Read This Weekend

"I wanted to ensure when I walked away that Todd Bowles would have the best opportunity to succeed," Bruce Arians said at a news conference on Thursday.Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

Rooney Rule? Maybe the N.F.L. should forget the Rooney Rule, which the league leans on in a halfhearted effort to increase diversity among its head coaches. What the N.F.L. needs are more leaders like Bruce Arians of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, our columnist Kurt Streeter writes.

Arians shocked football by announcing his retirement as head coach this week, elevating his handpicked successor, Todd Bowles, to the job.

"A number of people have already asked, why are you stepping away from a chance to go to the Hall of Fame and win another Super Bowl?" Arians said this week. "Succession is way more important to me. This has been my dream for a long time."

"I wanted one of my guys to take over," he added. "That's more important to me than anything."

What to Watch This Weekend

North Carolina's dominant win over St. Peter's ensured that the Final Four of the N.C.A.A. men's basketball tournament would be filled with blue bloods.Patrick Smith/Getty Images

All times are Eastern.

College Basketball

From 68 to four. The men's N.C.A.A. semifinals have finally arrived, with Kansas vs. Villanova (Saturday, 6:09 p.m., TBS) and, in one of the biggest Tobacco Road showdowns ever, North Carolina vs. Duke (Saturday, 8:49 p.m., TBS).

And the women are one step further along, with their final happening the next day (Sunday, 8 p.m., ESPN).

Golf

Though the tournament is no longer officially named after Dinah Shore — its longtime host, and one of women's golf's biggest proponents — the Chevron Championship is still an L.P.G.A. major. Contenders could include Minjee Lee, Lydia Ko and Patty Tavatanakit (final round, Sunday, 5 p.m., Golf Channel).

Horse Racing

If it's April, it must almost be Triple Crown season, and the Florida and Arkansas Derbies will produce serious contenders for the bigger prizes in May and June. The best in Florida so far is probably Simplification, while the fast filly Secret Oath is taking a shot in Arkansas (Florida Derby, 6:38 p.m., CNBC; Arkansas Derby, 7:35 p.m., FS1).
