Sports: What to read and watch

Young football players put their hopes in Bishop Sycamore and ended up with nothing.

What to Read This Weekend

It didn't go well for Bishop Sycamore against IMG Academy.Jeff Lange/USA Today Network

A school called Bishop Sycamore played a televised game against the powerhouse IMG Academy in August and made a splash on ESPN for all the wrong reasons.

The team, which had played a game only two days before, was pummeled, 58-0. Almost overnight, Bishop Sycamore became shorthand for sports factories that cynically masquerade as schools to produce elite, made-for-TV athletes.

Yet less attention has been paid to the perspectives of the players who descended upon the school in Columbus, Ohio, and entrusted their futures to strangers.

They came from as far away as Georgia and California. But few communities were better represented — or in the end, more disappointed — than two areas in the Bronx where football players, many of them Black and poor, grew up within blocks of one another.

What to Watch This Weekend

All times are Eastern.

Ultimately, games like the New Mexico Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl don't have an impact on the national championship. But I enjoy watching these quirky college football matchups anyway: Can Fresno State beat Texas-El Paso? Who is superior, Appalachian State or Western Kentucky?

Football

There are six bowl games on Saturday, two of which have teams ranked in the playoff Top 25. In the Independence Bowl, No. 13 Brigham Young takes on Alabama-Birmingham (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., ABC). In the New Orleans Bowl, No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette meets Marshall (Saturday, 9:15 p.m., ESPN).

Despite their 6-7 records, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Football Team are hanging in for a wild-card spot. But this week's game between them is crucial. The Times's Playoff Simulator estimates that a Team win would increase its chance of a berth to 53 percent, while an Eagles win would put them at 42 percent. The loser's chances will almost vanish.

Volleyball

The N.C.A.A. women's volleyball tournament finishes up, with a final between 10th-seeded Nebraska and fourth-seeded Wisconsin, which is going for its first title (Saturday, 7:30 p.m., ESPN2).

Swimming

Some of the top swimmers in the world are competing at a world championship, but they are doing more flip turns. The short-course world championships in Abu Dhabi takes place in a 25-meter pool rather than an Olympic-size 50-meter pool (Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m., Olympic Channel).
