Larry Miller, a former team president of the Portland Trail Blazers who is now the head of the Michael Jordan brand at Nike, has written a book revealing that at age 16, he murdered someone. |
Miller was in a gang, and, on the night of Sept. 30, 1965, he was drunk on cheap wine and seeking retribution for the stabbing death of a member of his crew. He shot Edward David White, an 18-year-old who was walking home from a work shift at a suburban diner. White, who was unarmed and had no police record, was left to die in the street, Jeré Longman and Kevin Draper report. |
Miller, now 72, kept that secret for more than half a century, disclosing it in a recent Sports Illustrated interview and a forthcoming book. |
But the disclosure blindsided the family of the victim, whose name Miller never mentioned. |

The National Women's Soccer League has advanced to the semifinals of its playoffs (Washington-OL Reign, Sunday, 3 p.m., CBSSN; Chicago-Portland, Sunday, 5:30 p.m., CBSSN). |
Sweden and Spain are in a dogfight at the top of the table in World Cup qualifying, and only the winner of their group is assured to advance. That makes this weekend's game in Seville vital (Sunday, 2:45 p.m., ABC). |
As Emmanuel Morgan writes in The Times about one of the best games of the week: "The Patriots (5-4) are riding a three-game winning streak, sniffing at the A.F.C. East lead, and playing as consistently as it's reasonable to expect from a team led by a rookie quarterback. Mac Jones has finished only two games with a completion percentage below 60 percent and New England has been able to lean on Damien Harris, who is tied for third in rushing touchdowns (7) and ranks ninth in yards (547). But Cleveland knows something about disruptions. The Browns (5-4) allow only 84.8 rushing yards per game, a factor that could unbalance the Patriots' offense. Myles Garrett's pressure could shorten the window for Jones's throws downfield." (Sunday, 1 p.m., CBS.) |
In college play, Oklahoma remains unbeaten, but is only No. 8 in the playoff rankings. A win at No. 13 Baylor may finally bring some respect (Saturday, noon, Fox). |
The college season got underway this week, and early No. 1 Gonzaga has a marquee game with No. 5 Texas, which made heavy use of the transfer portal in the off-season (Saturday, 10:30 p.m., ESPN2). |
