 County Executive Marc Elrich talks about the contributions Montgomery County's veterans have made as Veterans Day approaches. He also details how the County is off to a good start in vaccinating 5-to-11-year-old children. He addresses how the passage of the $1.75 trillion dollar infrastructure bill by Congress could impact the County and takes pride in the improvements being made by the County's Department of Permitting Services. And he reflects on visits he is regularly making to County businesses and nonprofit organizations.  Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 years of age, Montgomery County is now vaccinating young people in this age group.  The Montgomery County Government will observe special schedules for the Veterans Day holiday on Thursday, Nov. 11.  Members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will join public Veterans Day ceremonies in Downtown Wheaton at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The ceremony is being organized by the Silver Spring Memorial Post 2562 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States and American Legion Post 268. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and members of the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs are expected to attend. |  Major General Hawthorne Proctor, the first African American to serve as quartermaster general in the U.S. Army, will be the featured speaker on Saturday, Nov. 13, as the NAACP's Montgomery County Branch Armed Forces and Veterans Committee hosts an event at the Rockville Memorial Library to salute veterans. The event, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., will include the screening of three documentaries. |  Montgomery County's COVID-19 Information Portal provides a variety of breakdowns on how the virus has impacted the County. The statistics are updated to reflect the most recent reports from the State of Maryland during the health crisis. Among the information available is how many positive cases have been reported in each zip code in the County.  A life-sized bronze sculpture honoring famed Washington Post sportswriter Shirley Povich and Baseball Hall-of-Fame pitcher Walter Johnson was unveiled on Nov. 6 at Shirley Povich Field at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda. Montgomery Parks, which is part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club, organized the ceremonies.  The 20th anniversary of the "Friends of Black Hill Nature Programs" group at Black Hill Regional Park in Boyds will be celebrated with a virtual event from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and The Friends of Black Hill Nature Programs, a nonprofit organization that supports environmental and community-based initiatives for Black Hill Nature Programs, will host the celebration, which will feature professor, entomologist and author Doug Tallamy as the guest speaker. | Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will host its first-ever "Urban Wood Sale" on Saturday, Nov. 13, and Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Montgomery Parks Green Farm Maintenance Facility located at 8301 Turkey Thicket Drive in Gaithersburg. Wood that can be used for unique projects will be available for purchase from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day.  The latest episode of the "What's Happening MoCo" podcast will feature an interview with Susan Kenedy, a senior communications officer for the Montgomery County Council who reflects on her 30 years as the main reporter-producer for the Council on cable station County Cable Montgomery (CCM). |  Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich has announced a new grant program for Montgomery County small businesses to help them promote their products and services prior to the holiday shopping season. Applications for the "Online Sales and Telework Grant Program" will be available from Friday, Nov. 12, through midnight on Friday, Nov. 19. Grants of up to $10,000 each will be available. |  Events and special programs for residents of all interests and ages will be available throughout November from Montgomery Parks. The events will include evening campfires for families, which include outdoor movies, and adult-only campfires.  The construction project on Beach Drive in Kensington, between Kensington Parkway and Old Spring Road, has been accelerated by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation so that a two-lane vehicle bridge can be replaced and the road reopened by April 1. The road has been closed since Aug. 30. The Montgomery County Commission on Aging is offering information about the causes, health risks and resources to combat social isolation and loneliness among older adults. The fact sheet "Social Isolation and Loneliness: Facts for Older Adults" provides resources and websites for those with who feel lonely and isolated, as well as their caregivers.  With the fall season comes falling leaves. For those who choose to rake the leaves into paper lawn bags to be collected for recycling, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection reminds them not to throw trash—or anything other than leaves and small, thin branches—into the bags.  The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has immediate openings for full-time and part-time Ride On bus operators. The positions offer applicants 21-and-over paid CDL license training, a competitive benefits package and a fun, supportive atmosphere, with ongoing professional development opportunities. Free online workshops and one-on-one sessions geared toward assisting job seekers and entrepreneurs are available throughout November. Montgomery County Public Libraries is sponsoring the programs. |
