Members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will join public Veterans Day ceremonies in Downtown Wheaton at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The ceremony is being organized by the Silver Spring Memorial Post 2562 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States and American Legion Post 268. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and members of the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs are expected to attend.

Major General Hawthorne Proctor, the first African American to serve as quartermaster general in the U.S. Army, will be the featured speaker on Saturday, Nov. 13, as the NAACP's Montgomery County Branch Armed Forces and Veterans Committee hosts an event at the Rockville Memorial Library to salute veterans. The event, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., will include the screening of three documentaries.

A life-sized bronze sculpture honoring famed Washington Post sportswriter Shirley Povich and Baseball Hall-of-Fame pitcher Walter Johnson was unveiled on Nov. 6 at Shirley Povich Field at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda. Montgomery Parks, which is part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club, organized the ceremonies.

Beach Drive Bridge Replacement Project in Kensington Accelerated for Early April Reopening

The construction project on Beach Drive in Kensington, between Kensington Parkway and Old Spring Road, has been accelerated by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation so that a two-lane vehicle bridge can be replaced and the road reopened by April 1. The road has been closed since Aug. 30.
