This is a reimbursable detail opportunity for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and is expected to begin in Spring 2022. The successful candidate will be required to serve and successfully complete an initial, temporary detail at the Office of International Affairs in Washington, D.C. for approximately thirty (30) to sixty (60) days prior to receiving final clearance and reporting to the duty station in Manila. The detail is funded by the Criminal Division.
The responsibilities of the Attaché include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing and monitoring extradition and similar removal requests; requests for legal assistance in criminal matters between the United States and assigned countries; and resolving problems pertaining to those requests. Frequent travel between Manila and other Southeast Asian countries will be required;
- Working with U.S. and foreign prosecutors and investigators in connection with criminal investigations and prosecutions;
- Serving generally as liaison to prosecution, law enforcement and judicial authorities in the assigned countries to ensure that the law enforcement interests of the Department of Justice are understood and given due consideration by the foreign governments;
- Developing expertise in the criminal laws and procedures of the Attaché's assigned countries in order to assist U.S. authorities with questions on law enforcement matters, and assist foreign authorities with questions regarding U.S. criminal laws and procedures, all with a view toward better cooperation and coordination through mutual understanding;
- Working with and advising all U.S. law enforcement agencies and appropriate Embassy personnel stationed in the Attaché's assigned countries on transnational criminal issues;
- Working closely with senior Department of State (DOS) officials on international criminal matters, with the aim of clearly articulating the interests of the Department of Justice, and working toward effective integration of those interests with the policies and priorities of the Embassy and the DOS.
