Early Birds Get Gifts

The Story

Shipping delays are the new grinch.

How did this happen?

The pandemic for 100, please. Earlier this year, the delta variant threw a wrench in the supply chain as recovering global economies had to shut down to contain outbreaks. Add in a shipping container stuck side-ways in one of the busiest shipping lanes. Plus, other pandemic effects (like a labor shortage, clogged ports, and high demand). And we've got the recipe for record shortages. Aka the reason, your couch is a few months late. But it's also affecting the price of goods. Think: Yesterday's price is not today's price.

Why's that?

As factories struggle to get raw materials, and more businesses lose their workforce (hi, shecession and "The Great Resignation") they're passing the buck to consumers to cover costs. And as retailers receive less merchandise, products (like: tablets, computers) are selling fast. One online shopping forecast predicts that out-of-stock messages are expected to be up 172% this holiday season compared to 2020. Meaning: Procrastinating on holiday shopping this year could leave you empty-handed.

Uh oh.

Don't worry, you could still get that shopping list crossed off if you hurry. (Yes, we mean now.) But expect some changes to your usual shipping rates. Struggling shipping companies (think: USPS) are raising prices on certain services. And extending delivery times. (Read: the opposite of instant gratification.) And other top carriers (like FedEx) are suffering from the effects of the worker shortage. So if you're looking to get packages to your loved ones on time, ship 'em by these dates. Or be prepared to write some IOUs.

Nearly two years into the pandemic, we're still feeling the ripple effects. And this year, it may seriously impact your holiday shopping. Now you know what to expect. So hop to it.
