Sports: What to read and watch

Jacob DeGrom's home town

What to Read This Weekend

To know where the Mets ace Jacob deGrom is going, look at where he's from.

At the end of a dream season cut short by injuries, he will retreat to rural Florida to find his path back to greatness.

In a no-stoplight town, where Spanish moss dangles over split-rail fences and sugar-mill ruins rest along Spring Garden Lake's shore, Tony deGrom, a retired cable lineman, awaits the return of his son, Jacob, each fall, Kevin Armstrong writes.

By the time Jacob turned 2, Tony had put a ball in his son's hands and was watching his greenhorn grow. Jacob is now 33 and a two-time Cy Young Award winner for the Mets. But the son still drives his pickup truck down a dirt path to his childhood home to throw with his dad.

What to Watch This Weekend

Is there a big futsal game this weekend? You bet. It's the biggest of them all.Antonio Cotrim/EPA, via Shutterstock

All times are Eastern.

Football

Tom Brady's return to Foxborough was always going to be big, and the Buccaneers-Patriots contest is undoubtedly the game of the week. Emmanuel Morgan of The Times has these updates: "The Buccaneers will have Antonio Brown back from the reserve/Covid list, but the team will be without slot receiver Scotty Miller and potentially the pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul. The veteran free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman will join the Bucs as their secondary battles injuries, though Coach Bruce Arians said he doubted Sherman would play on Sunday" (Sunday, 8:20 p.m, NBC).

Challenging games for the top two college teams this week. No. 1 Alabama faces No. 12 Mississippi (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., CBS), and No. 2 Georgia takes on No. 8 Arkansas (noon, ESPN).

Soccer

The top two teams in the Premier League match up in a mouthwatering early-season game: Liverpool, in first, hosts Manchester City, a point back in second (Sunday, 11:30 a.m., NBC).

Los Angeles hosts the colorful El Tráfico derby. The game is particularly important to L.A.F.C., which has some work to do to get into the playoff positions (Sunday, 8 p.m., ESPN).

Basketball

The best of 5 WNBA semifinals are both knotted at one game apiece, with Game 3 this weekend. The top seeded Connecticut Sun visit the Chicago Sky (Sunday, 1 p.m., ESPN), and the Las Vegas Aces are at the Phoenix Mercury (Sunday, 3 p.m., ABC).

Horse Racing

Medina Spirit caused a stir in the spring by winning the Kentucky Derby and then failing a drug test. While appeals grind on in that case, the horse keeps running. Next stop is the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, where he will face tough older horses like Tripoli and Idol (Saturday, 8:10 p.m., TVG).

The biggest race of the year in Europe is always the Arc de Triomphe in Paris: This year it includes English Derby winner Adayar and Irish Derby winner Hurricane Lane (Sunday, 10:05 a.m., TVG).

Futsal

If you watch only one futsal game every four years, this is the one. (Futsal is form of indoor soccer, for those who don't know). It's the World Cup Final from Lithuania, with defending champions Argentina taking on Portugal (Sunday, 1 p.m., NBC Universo).
