May 01, 2021 Medina Spirit wins the 147th Kentucky Derby, giving trainer Bob Baffert seven derby wins Bob Baffert-trained Medina Spirit won the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby, as it returned to its usual first Saturday in May after last year's pandemic delayed the event to September. Mandaloun finished second, while Hot Rod Charlie finished third. The win marks a record seven derby wins for Baffert and fourth for jockey John Velazquez.
