Four people — including a child — were killed in a mass shooting in California
Four people were killed at an Orange, California business complex on Wednesday. A woman identified as the fifth victim was hospitalized.
A spokesperson for the Orange Police Department said police received a report of shots fired at a two-story complex on Wednesday evening, where a number of businesses operate. When officers arrived at the scene, they exchanged gunfire with the male suspect, police said. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The Orange shooting is being described as the worst in the city in nearly 24 years. The incident comes on the heels of mass shootings in Georgia and Colorado in the last two weeks.

Biden's $2 trillion infrastructure plan is no Green New Deal, progressives said
This week, President Joe Biden proposed spending more than $2 trillion to overhaul the nation's aging infrastructure, from roads to water pipelines and electric grids, in a way that tackles climate change and creates jobs.
There are echoes of the ambitious Green New Deal plan in Biden's proposal — for instance, the focus on cutting pollution, supporting vulnerable populations, and generating new jobs.
But progressive politicians and climate groups say Biden's plan falls far short of the Green New Deal, which proposes the US hit net-zero emissions by 2030. Biden's plan, they say, doesn't dedicate nearly enough money to the project.
A spokesperson for the youth climate group Sunrise Movement acknowledged that the proposal is historic, but still noted that "the truth is this does not meet the scale and the scope of what we need to meet the true scale and urgency of the climate crisis." Updates from the Derek Chauvin murder trial
Charles McMillian, a 61-year-old Black man who witnessed George Floyd's death, broke down in court after watching a video of himself watching Floyd yelling, "I can't breathe" and calling for his mother.
McMillian sobbed while testifying, prompting the judge to call for a 10-minute break. In the video, Mcmillian is heard repeatedly telling Floyd to get up off the ground and get in the police vehicle, saying, "You can't win, man." Asked what he meant, McMillian told the court, "Once... the cops on you, you can't win. Just cooperate, get in the car, go with them, and you can win."
Meanwhile, the teen who told his manager about Floyd's fake $20 bill said he felt guilty. "If I would have just not taken the bill, this could have been avoided," he told the court. The CDC is pushing back against critics who say COVID-19 death numbers have been overcounted. COVID-19 drove a 15.9% increase in the nationwide death rate in 2020, alongside increases from heart disease, injuries, Alzheimer's, and diabetes.
Trans troops can now serve freely and get gender-affirming medical care. The new policies prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, allow people to enlist under the gender with which they identify, protect the privacy of trans troops, and provide a path for trans service members to seek medical treatment for their transition.
A judge ruled Trump's campaign can't enforce an ex-staffer's "unduly burdensome" nondisclosure agreement. The ramifications are significant — the decision keeps alive a legal fight that could end up voiding all NDAs signed by staffers who worked on Trump's 2016 campaign. "I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR THIS"
Young doctors faced down the pandemic but aren't sure about their future
With the news that the US will have enough vaccines to inoculate every American adult by Memorial Day, the end of the pandemic is within sight. But for young doctors who have been on the frontlines for a year, processing the trauma hasn't even begun, because they are still reeling from it.
It's a dimension that has not received much coverage over the last 12 months. But resident physicians who are relatively new on the job took on more patients and duties with little training and less supervision.
In some places, jobs are scarce as hospital budgets have taken a hit. So now, physicians who are just beginning their careers fear they're burning out too soon and wonder if they'll be able to stick with the medical careers they worked so long and hard to achieve.
One told us, "There's a lot of emotions that just run through your head. Part of you is like, I didn't sign up for this. This isn't something I should be doing." Jae C. Hong / AP A POWERFUL LIST 13 books to read for Trans Visibility Day
