OPINION: Trump's tax documents are with prosecutors. But the clock counts down in his favor, according to former U.S. Attorney Carol C. Lam.

Last week, former President Donald Trump technically lost the court battle not to have to produce his tax materials, but he may have won the longer-term war — to slow the progress of the criminal investigations, former U.S. attorney and MSNBC legal analyst Carol C. Lam writes for NBC News THINK.

Statutes of limitations vary widely, Lam writes. But the financial crimes that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is most likely to be investigating carry a statute of limitations of only six years. So Trump is already working with a clock quickly ticking down to his advantage.
