Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar's civilian government, urged people across the country to oppose a military coup in which the army took control of the country Monday. Suu Kyi and other leading officials were detained the day before legislators elected in November were due to start a new parliamentary term in office. The army declared a state of emergency for a year and said it would hold elections after that, saying it seized control in response to "election fraud." |
