***** PUBLICATION ADVISORY ***** BJS RELEASES REPORTS ON FEDERAL PRISONER STATISTICS; BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR FIREARM TRANSFERS WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics today released Federal Prisoner Statistics Collected under the First Step Act, 2020. This is the second report as required under the First Step Act of 2018 (FSA; P.L. 115-391). It includes data on federal prisoners provided to BJS by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for calendar year 2019, the first full year of BOP operation under the FSA. BJS also released Background Checks for Firearm Transfers, 2016-2017. This report is the sixteenth in a series produced by BJS on background checks for firearm transfers and permits. It examines the frequency of background checks for firearm transfers under the Brady Act and the nature and frequency of denials of such transfers. The report also describes the number of denied transfers referred to ATF for further investigation.
