Moments ago, I was elected to serve as the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. I am honored to continue this fight alongside you, Steven -- not to mention Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Democrats from state houses to the Senate.
I've been a state party chair, worked on Capitol Hill, partnered with grassroots organizations, and most recently run for Senate. Those experiences taught me to move forward and do good -- but they also taught me that as Democrats, we often invest more in our candidates than we do in the infrastructure they need to win.
I know we can continue to win at every level in every state -- just look at Georgia! Steven, I'm no stranger to the struggles so many Americans are facing. As the son of a single teenage mom in Orangeburg, South Carolina, my grandparents raised me. I knew what it was like to choose between paying the electric bill and putting food on the table. I knew what it was like to eat cereal with water because we couldn't afford milk.
I've dedicated my life to making things just a little bit easier for folks like my grandparents -- and I'm going to bring those memories and values with me to my work at the DNC.
We were able to maintain our House majority and narrowly win back the Senate this year because of folks like you -- thank you. But these slim majorities mean that our lasting strategy cannot be swooping in every few years and placing our bets on a new candidate winning -- we must build on Chair Perez's work to ensure long-term, sustainable power everywhere we want to win. That's why I have to ask:
