A pandemic-fueled transportation and commerce revolution is rivaling the railroad boom of the 19th century

Nearly 200 years after the first freight cars carried goods over railroads, America is in the middle of a new revolution in transportation and commerce, fueled by the coronavirus pandemic and online shopping delivery.

The surge in online orders has led some of the country's e-commerce giants through a historic expansion of transcontinental delivery networks that rivals the railroad boom of the 19th century, said one global supply chain expert.
