A beheading, a cartoon and two ambitious leaders stoke tensions between France and the Muslim world

After a suspected terrorist attack in Nice on Thursday left three people dead and others injured, President Emmanuel Macron said France had been targeted "over our values, for our taste for freedom, for the ability on our soil to have freedom of belief."

The attack came 24 hours after publication of the latest provocative Charlie Hebdo cartoon helped escalate tensions between France and the Muslim world. In a war of words, Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have styled themselves as selfless champions of persecuted traditions and worldviews who are prepared to wage rhetorical combat on the world stage.
