Some states are beginning to wake up to the inequalities of parentage laws

Sara Watson and Anna Ford always wanted children. But when Ford gave birth to their son three years ago, Watson could not put her name on his birth certificate even though he was conceived using her egg. The couple had to undergo an onerous adoption process that took months before Watson had legal rights to care for her son. 

The United States is a patchwork quilt when it comes to the legal definition of "parent," and LGBTQ people and women are most likely to fall through the cracks. But changes are slowly being made at the state level to address these legal gaps and prevent other LGBTQ parents from going through what happened to Watson.
