Russia deploys warships after dozens of Turkish soldiers killed in Syria escalation

Russia on Friday announced it had dispatched two state-of-the-art warships to the Middle East after an attack in Syria killed 33 Turkish soldiers.

The escalation of violence again highlighted Russia and Turkey's conflicting interests: Moscow backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Ankara backs rebel groups opposing him in the country's north. Turkey has turned to the West for support amid fears of further escalation.
