Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos pledged $10 billion this month to an initiative to combat climate change, dubbed the Bezos Earth Fund. But his generosity is more complicated than just rich people trying to make the planet a better place, writes Radical Urbanist editor Paris Marx for NBC News THINK.

Billionaires like Bezos are empowered to swoop in as the saviors when the government fails to take action — the product of an American mindset that relies on the capitalist class to chart the path forward, writes Marx. But the wealthy have a clear incentive to avoid truly transformative change; they profit from the world as it is, not as it could be.
