Persons with a Disability: Labor Force Characteristics – 2019

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released "Persons with a Disability: Labor Force Characteristics – 2019" report. In 2019, the annual unemployment rate for persons with a disability declined to the lowest level on record, 7.3% - in comparison, the annual unemployment rate for persons without a disability was 3.5%. BLS statistics showed that 19.3% of persons with a disability were employed in 2019. Employment data on persons with a disability are collected as part of the Current Population Survey, a monthly survey of about 60,000 households. The collection of data on persons with a disability is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).

Financial Security Blog

In honor of America Saves Week 2020, the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration and Office of Disability Employment Policy published a blog on "5 Tips on Building Financial Security for People with Disabilities." The blog outlines information to help individuals with disabilities build their savings and work towards their financial goals.

Zero Project Award

The Zero Project, an Essl Foundation-funded nonprofit, recognized ODEP's Community College Pathways to Careers for Youth and Young Adults initiative with a 2020 Innovative Policy award. The Pathways projects are Universal Pathways to Employment at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, TN, and Onondaga Pathways to Careers at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY. The programs were selected for their promising outcomes and potential for replication in integrating academics and career services to increase graduation rates and job placement for students with disabilities.

JAN Consultants' Corner

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) Principal Consultant Linda Carter Batiste posted a Consultants' Corner article on "Employment Agencies and Title I of the ADA." She explains that in some situations, employment agencies are covered by Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and in others, they are not. She describes the differences and discusses the varied interpretations of the law.
