The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Monday, February 24, 2020

Algeria: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

Algeria does not develop, commercialize or import genetically engineered products. However, biotechnology institutions in Algeria promote and carry out applied research in biotechnology to address the needs of Algeria in the field of health, environment, bio-industry, food and agriculture.

Israel: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

As of October 2019, there are no changes in Israel's policy towards plant and animal biotechnology compared to 2018. Israel does not have a policy restricting the use of imported genetically engineered (GE) commodities or derivative products. GE crop production is permissible for research purposes. Regulations permit GE commodities and products to be imported, sold, and used for food and feed, as well as for ornamental purposes and pharmaceutical use.

Jordan: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's agricultural biotechnology regulations throughout 2018-19 remain unchanged. In 2016, Jordan's Ministry of Environment enacted a biosafety law based on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The country continues to have no clear agricultural biotechnology framework. It has yet to establish an implementing regulation covering the trade in living modified organisms (LMOs); it also lacks a notification mechanism.

Russia: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

On January 29, 2018, the Government of the Russian Federation issued Resolution No. 81 "On Amending the Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 839 of September 23, 2013." The amendment "grand-fathered" registrations of feeds that were launched prior to July 1, 2017, waiving prior registration of each GE organism for such feeds. Russia continues the ban on cultivation and breeding of genetically engineered (GE) plants and animals in the Russian Federation per Federal Law No. 358-FZ of July 3, 2016. While imports of registered GE products are permitted, currently there are no methodological guidelines for registering GE events for feed use as well as for stacked events, making it impossible for those events to be registered and in some cases preventing their import. There is a mechanism for registration of GE products for food use.
