Sports: The Quiet Before a Bull Ride

Read about bull riding in NYC, watch Coco Gauff at the Australian Open

The Quiet Moments Before a Bone-Rattling Bull Ride

Devin Yalkin for The New York Times

Every January, the world’s best bull-riders gather at Madison Square Garden to kick off their season.

We followed one of the cowboys, Jared Parsonage from Saskatchewan, Canada, in the moments ahead of his ride.

“The all have their own personality and their own characteristics,” Parsonage said of the bulls. “Some are a little wilder, some are meaner, some are gentle, but they all know their job.”

The scene and crowds are a world away from other stops of the Professional Bull Riders tour, which includes events all over the United States, from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Duluth, Ga.

“When you’re in the zone, you don’t really hear the chatter outside of it,” Parsonage said. “At the end of the day, you’re the one. It’s your turn. You’re riding the bull.”

What to Watch This Weekend

Coco Gauff beat Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open, 6-3, 6-4.Asanka Brendon Ratnayake for The New York Times

All times are Eastern.

TENNIS

Tennis fans in the United States continue to have their body clocks turned upside down with all-night coverage of the Australian Open. Saturday evening’s fourth-round matches, with the broadcast starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time, include Coco Gauff vs. Sofia Kenin, top-seeded Ashleigh Barty vs. Alison Riske, Roger Federer vs. Marton Fucsovics and Novak Djokovic vs. Diego Schwartzman (ESPN2).

FOOTBALL

Finally, a weekend without football. Or is it? Don’t forget the Pro Bowl, where star players will halfheartedly block and tackle, and because of a new rule we might see a 4th-and-15 situation replace an onside kick. (3 p.m., Sunday, ABC and ESPN)

SOCCER

The magic of the F.A. Cup continues with 32 teams being cut to 16 this weekend. Mighty Liverpool (20-0-1 in the Premier League) isn’t expected to have trouble with little Shrewsbury Town from the third tier (noon, Sunday). But look for Portsmouth (pushing for promotion from the third tier) to beat Barnsley (sinking in the second tier) (10 a.m., Saturday). (All games, ESPN+)

In Italy, the third-place Lazio visits the fourth-place Roma in an alluring renewal of the Derby della Capitale, between Rome’s two big teams. (Noon, Sunday, ESPN2)

N.B.A.

There are better games over the weekend, but many fans will be turning eagerly to ESPN at 6 p.m. on Sunday to see the Pelicans’ Zion Williamson play against the Celtics. Williamson impressed in his N.B.A. debut against the Spurs on Wednesday, at one point scoring 17 points in just over three minutes.
