The internet can often feel like an endless feed populated by robots and algorithms. There are no robots here at Scouted, just real people who love deals and products that can improve your life. You're new here, so we want to introduce you to Scouted's editorial manager Jillian Lucas. Here's what she can't live without:
What's the best thing you've bought in the last six months? Prior to coming to Scouted, I worked at a more deal-focused website, but even before that it was what I grew up doing. For years, it's been a tradition for me to hit up the outlet mall with my mom whenever I came home to visit. I would sift through racks of clothing and shelves of shoes and usually end up scoring something. I had been lusting after a pair of Alexander Wang Gabi boots that I wanted for a while but they never seemed to pop up at any of the outlet or discount stores, even if it was one associated with a department store. Then, one day, they were there and I clutched them like a little kid holds their favorite stuffed animal and walked around the store with a dumb smile on my face. The heel is the perfect height, the shaft doesn't irritate my shin (as some boots do), and the shape is just classic. I managed to get them at the tail-end of spring, so I didn't get to wear them as much as I had hoped, but you bet your ass I'm gonna wear them once the temperature drops below 60.I'm a new Text block ready for your content.
What's one thing you've recommended to everyone? These silk hair ties. God, even just saying that makes me feel ridiculous but honestly, they have changed so many parts of my day. I previously swore by the invisibobble to help keep my hair out of my face without putting the dreaded dent in it. But, after a while, they just weren't cutting it. I saw one of these hair ties on a friend's wrist and immediately bought a set. I now have two sets that I rotate through because I tend to just put them down in places and forget. These are the only hair ties I have ever used that leave virtually no evidence of wear in my hair, even if I keep them in overnight. They're the right thickness (though you can get them in medium and large if you're going to wear them more for accessorizing) to hold my hair without damage or dents. I have told friends, my mom, and even strangers how awesome these things really are.
If you could put together a dream outfit (shoes included), which pieces would you include? My actual dream outfit is jeans, a crisp T-shirt, high-tops, and a leather jacket (simple, chic, comfortable). We'll start with what's underneath, though. Underwear has got to be the Laser Cut Hipsters from Target's in-house brand Auden. As someone with pretty high standards when it comes to comfort, a pair of underwear that rides up, bunches, or becomes a permanent wedgie (when it isn't supposed to be) will immediately be relegated to laundry-day-only territory. These are so comfortable and sleek that you'll forget you're wearing them, and they come in all the neutral shades you need. Moving up, the bralette has got to be the Yummie Antonette bralette. It's incredibly soft and disappears under anything I wear. The jeans are definitely the Everlane Cheeky Ankle Jeans. They fit my waist, hug my hips, and are the perfect length to be cuffed right at the ankle, a feat I appreciate because of my small stature. Mott & Bow's T-shirts have quickly become my go-to and the Boxy Semi-Crop Tee is just the perfect weight and cut to be a holy grail for me. As for a leather jacket, I'm partial to the oversized Veda jacket I got from one of their sample sales. The brand really knows its way around leather. I was looking for a boxy fit that didn't have a belt at the bottom, usually a pretty classic style for jackets, but something I don't really love. For socks, honestly? Old Navy. They have Dachshunds dressed up as hot dogs and Frenchies as bananas, come on! And to top it off, a pair of classic Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Tops in White Monochrome.
What's your go-to work bag and what's inside it? The Mayume tote from Able is the work bag that I default to (when I'm not just using a canvas tote). It's spacious but doesn't overwhelm my frame and is made from a durable leather that looks better and better the more I beat it up. Plus, ABLE is all about empowering women and making an ethical, and therefore better, fashion industry. I keep a notebook for all my pitches and interview notes, a pouch with my reusable straws, a pair of headphones (when I remember them), my laptop, sunglasses, and a handful of beauty things: Nest hand cream, Glossier lip gloss, and Vertly peppermint CBD lip balm. Also a rather large collection of receipts, hair ties, loose change, etc. because I tend to be a garbage person when I'm in a rush.
Fill a suitcase with five things you absolutely have to take with you on a trip: First, the suitcase has gotta be the Away Carry-On. Let's suspend disbelief and say that I will wear one outfit, and only one outfit, on my trip so I won't include any clothing (even though I'm a notorious overpacker. I'm doing you a favor here, trust me). First thing is my Kindle Paperwhite. Before every single trip, whether it's on the train to visit my parents in Jersey for the weekend or on an actual vacation, I load that thing up with at least two books and fully charge it. You can always make time to read. Next is two beauty items I wear 99% of the time I'm awake: Kaja Cat Nap Under Eye Brightener and Glossier Lash Slick. After years of taking better care of my skin, I have gotten to the point where I'm confident enough to leave the house sans-face makeup. But, my eyes will always look tired thanks to dark circles and lacking lashes. These two easy-to-use beauty products make me look (and feel) like I'm a functioning member of society and not just a reincarnated shell of myself. Then it would be this travel-friendly noise machine. After taking many a-trip with my boyfriend and his terrible sound machine apps (or complaining about how quiet a room is, somehow) this has saved us from sleepless nights—him from the lack of noise and me from his tossing/turning/grumbling. Finally would be my Allbirds Loungers. These things are better than slippers, because they can be worn out and about if need be. But they're warm, comfy, and help when I want the hotel room to be freezing but refuse to put socks on (who lays in bed while wearing socks?!).
You have $50 to spend on Amazon. What single item do you get? This is a tough one, because to me $50 on Amazon is a hard line to hit! I usually tend to buy quick, impulse-buy things that are $20 and under. If I had to recommend something, I'd say an Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is a great $50-ish buy for anyone. It's like a Kindle on steroids. It's the iPad's second cousin twice removed, plus without the iPad price tag. You get access to games and apps, plus the ability to stream movies and TV shows while you travel. My boyfriend picked one up before we headed on a 7+ hour train trip and it was great.
We love kitchen stuff here at Scouted. What's the most important thing to have in a successful home kitchen? This isn't a single thing, per se, but organization is incredibly important to have a good at-home cooking experience. Get yourself bins for your fridge. Keep your pot lids organized with a rack that you can stash in a cabinet. Stick a giant, magnetic shelf to wherever you can to make sure that all the important things are in reach. Add shelves to your spice cabinet. There are so many ways to stay organized, which will help you while you're wheelin' and dealin' in the kitchen. Make a system that works for you and stick to it. Cooking should be a way of stress release and being organized is the start to that.
You're a beauty junkie. What's something that will forever stay in your skincare routine? Hands down, Garnier Micellar Water. This stuff works to take my makeup off, clean the gunk from my pores, and tone my skin. Just shake a little bit out onto a cotton pad (I keep meaning to get the reusable ones) and wipe away. I use it before washing my face to get my mascara and such off, then again after I wash my face to tone and clean a little bit deeper. I've been loyal to this product for the past three years and I don't see that changing any time soon. I even bring it with me when I travel because even though those makeup wipes are convenient, they just don't cut it for me.
With a dog at home, what's been the best thing you've gotten for him (or for you) that helps with being a dog parent? The dog in question, a neurotic Boston Terrier named Beef, is a nuisance when it comes to squeaky toys. He cannot get enough of them and always has to squeak them at inopportune times like the Game of Thrones finale. He also really loves to gnaw on the seams of the toys to separate them, pull the stuffing out, and proceed to chew on just the squeaker like it's a piece of bubble gum. It's really great, let me tell you. Anyway, I'm not sure who told me about these, but I got a "silent" squeaker toy that is honestly a lifesaver. The squeaker inside the toy is ultrasonic (like a dog whistle) so it makes noise at a frequency that humans can't hear, but dogs can. It's really impressive and saves the headache of an incessant squeak.
