Dear Times Reader,

Hello from the newsroom in New York City! Thank you for registering.

A bit about me: I’m a deputy editor on the Metro desk — conceiving, assigning and editing news stories about the New York area — and it’s a great fit, since Manhattan is where I grew up and where I “shot” Andy Warhol.

Before landing at The Times, I wrote and edited pieces about trends, culture and politics.

At The Times I’m working with reporters to uncover hard truths, including details about an apartment building that has not had heat for 10 years and an examination of how New York’s elite high schools gradually lost their black and Hispanic students. (As a Bronx Science graduate, the latter was a subject close to my heart.)

Of course, The Times covers the entire globe — and what’s beyond. So whether you’re in Indiana, Indonesia or on the International Space Station, you’re sure to find a story close to your heart, too.

A few recent pieces that had a major impact on me include the historical investigation into the year 1619, a serious investigation into an internet scam using photographs of soldiers and my friend Caity Weaver’s amusing investigation of how glitter is made. All are excellent examples of how The Times has the power to help us understand the world.

If you haven’t already, check out the Morning Briefing — a summary of the day’s news, sent directly to your inbox. If you’re into podcasts, check out “The Daily,” for more in-depth storytelling. And the easiest way to find all of this great stuff is on the New York Times app.

Not sure where to start? Consider this inspirational story about Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins, a 103-year-old woman who ran the 100-meter dash as motivation — her advice to “look for magic moments” has stayed with me.

Sincerely,

Dodai Stewart
